Purpose of Job
Responsible for successfully supporting and executing research projects/technical programs using unique Phenolic focused analytical skills to achieve research objectives for key project teams. Additionally, act as the hub for analytical discussions and expertise within Phenolics and when necessary, with other Sasol project, R&D, and analytical support groups.
Key Accountabilities
- Conduct the planning, coordination and execution of the analytical requirements for research projects and technical service needs for Phenolics R&D
- Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in the area of analytical chemistry and instrumentation that relates to Phenolics by investigating media, attending conferences, professional peers, laboratories, etc. with potential implementation as they relate to business unit projects and technical service
- Conduct the planning, coordination and execution of the analytical requirements for research projects and technical service needs for Phenolics R&D
- Define and execute analytical processes and procedures for the identification of previously unknown components in Phenolics’ many feed and product streams
- Coordinate the development, refinement, and implementation of analytical methods by all Phenolics and contractor laboratories including round robin analytical programs if necessary
- Coordinate the development, refinement, and implementation of analytical methods by all Phenolics and contractor laboratories including the initiation, oversite, and documentation of round robin analytical programs if necessary
- Act as the custodian of Phenolics R&D analytical methods and provide appropriate analytical methods as specified in customer/supplier contracts
Formal Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, or related field or
- Master’s degree in analytical chemistry preferred
Working Experience
- Greater than 10 years’ experience in analytical chemistry with proven successful track record.
- 5-6 years’ experience with advanced degree (MSC, PhD). Master’s degree in analytical chemistry (preferred)
Required Personal and Professional Skills
- Ability to effectively solve problems and reach conclusions in multiple technical areas
- Technical mastery of the fundamentals of a scientific or technical discipline, such as chemistry, engineering, etc. with strong mathematical/laboratory skills
- Maintains an effective network with key stakeholders
- Effective interpersonal skills to work with internal and external customers
- Functional Knowledge to include:
- Knowledge and experience in GC, LC, and Mass Spectrometry is required
- Knowledge and experience in wet analytical methods (particularly colorimetric methods, and acid base titrations)
- Knowledge and experience in analytical method development
- Management of capital projects for the acquisition and commissioning of analytical equipment
