FMC Research & Development, Formulations is seeking highly motivated, experienced Associate Scientists to join our Formulation team at Stine Research Center, Newark, DE. This is a great time to become part of the formulations group to continue to drive our robust pipeline and support our existing products.
Responsibilities
Working under the direction of a senior chemist with limited supervision, this individual will prepare formulations for agricultural solutions using novel technologies and perform physical tests on the formulations in order to characterize the products and to simulate and understand performance attributes. The successful candidate will also perform physical and chemical characterization of active ingredients and support the evaluation of new technologies for the organization.
Laboratory work involves wet and dry chemical techniques (e.g., milling, extrusion and granulation, microencapsulation, emulsification, and suspensibility tests, solution release tests), operation of physical-chemical instrumentation (e.g., particle size analyzer, zeta potential analyzer), and use of small-scale preparative equipment (e.g., high-shear mixers, laboratory reactors). Preliminary interpretation of results and testing data is required. The individual in this position may be given responsibility for projects of a more limited scope.
Below are highlights of key responsibilities
• Preparation of laboratory-scale liquid and solid formulations
• Plan and conduct experiments in the lab, making suggestions for improvement and troubleshooting, as needed, to meet timelines
• Writing protocols and reports for assigned activities/projects
• Physical-chemical evaluations of formulations to demonstrate robust performance and shelf-life
• Planning and organization of activities within assignment
• Initial data and results analysis and interpretation
• Prompt communication of results and analyses to the responsible chemists and/or management
• Documentation of experiments in a laboratory notebook
• Compliance with all FMC, group, and site, and departmental safety and GLP guidelines and regulations
• Help train new technical staff relative to laboratory procedures
• Travel to US plant locations as needed (approximately 5% travel)
Required Education
A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, physics, or other related degree concentration with 3 – 5 years of experience or an Associate degree in chemistry or related field with 3-5 years of laboratory research experience.

• Experience in quickly learning new, unfamiliar materials and techniques.
• Excellent safety practices – experience in working in a safe manner in all aspects of work according to FMC policies, procedures and practices.
• Knowledge of computer systems and basic office applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, data bases)
• Experience with laboratory equipment and apparatus.
