Commercial Analyst

Role Overview

The Senior Commercial Analyst is part of the commercial strategy & policy influence unit within the Energy Efficiency team.

This unit is primarily responsible for ensuring that British Gas delivers ECO competitively and cost-effectively both in the current phase and longer term.   This means leading on strategic planning, forecasting, pricing strategy, risk management, channel optimisation, innovation and competitor and market insight. The unit is also responsible for shaping the longer-term ECO policy position and supporting Centrica’s broader Net Zero energy efficiency development helping our customers live sustainably, simply and affordably. 

The Senior Commercial Analyst is varied role with extensive opportunities to develop a range of soft and hard commercial skills. The role has two core strands: 1) planning and performance, and 2) developing internal commercial opportunities.

What will you be doing?

Planning and Performance

  • Overseeing monthly update of plan, tracking volume, cost and price and presenting at monthly MBR.  Liaising with finance to provide regular cost outturns and prepare materials for Commercial
  • Undertaking price and volume variance analysis vs prior forecast and finance submissions (GFF/GAP).
  • Manage price book and work with contract management team to settle regular intra-contract price and volume variations
  • Support commercial team decision-making in the run-up to year end
  • Support securing strategy for ECO4 (2022-26), developing scenarios, and when live, maintaining multi-year plan, forecasting volumes and cost alongside the detailed annual budget.

Internal Opportunities

  • Support the development of direct lead generation, maintaining our online referral form and page content, recommending improvements based on research, visitor metrics or data insights. Developing cost effectiveness analysis.
  • Explore new ECO Supplier Flex proposals (live from April 2022), data-matching our customer base with DWP and support local authority projects where consumer selection applies.
  • Work with BG Services and Solutions colleagues to explore commercial opportunities for ECO, whether direct products (e.g. Hive installed as an ECO measure) or indirect products (e.g insulation as a prerequisite for our heat pump prop).
  • Working with journey teams to execute initiatives.

About You: Technical Knowledge

Are you someone who can extract knowledge and insights from data in order to investigate complex business problems?

Through a range of data preparation, modelling, analysis and/or visualization techniques, you are able to tell a story with data and articulate complex insight to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

This is an analyst role with opportunity for commercial development and execution. To be successful in this role you will be/have:

  • Excellent numerical & analytical capability with demonstrable problem-solving skills
  • Commercial acumen.
  • Experience working with large, complicated spreadsheets and databases. SQL helpful
  • Experience in improving cross functional operational processes or customer journey design advantageous for supporting development and execution of commercial initiatives
  • Strong communication skills (written, verbal and presentation)
  • Knowledge of ECO, energy efficiency or insulation market always advantageous
  • Graduate in a statistical or numerate discipline
