HV Cost Estimator

As part of the Grid Integration Division, the High Voltage Engineering team delivers pre-construction engineering and construction/commissioning engineering for High Voltage facilities associated with renewable energy power plants. Voltage ranges from 35kV up to 500kV. We are currently looking for a dynamic and experienced High Voltage Cost Estimator to forecast switchyard, substation, interconnection facilities and transmission lines costs for projects ranging from early development to execution.  The professional on this role should enjoy versatility of tasks with a strong focus on understanding the commercial and technical implications of substation and Transmission line construction. This is a solid opportunity for a professional that not only is proficient on the commercial aspects of the role but enjoys building and maintaining relationships with suppliers, consultants, and Power Utilities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for pre-construction budgetary estimates for interconnection facilities, collector substations and transmission lines related to Solar, Wind, and Battery storage (35kV to 500kV).

  • Lead and help develop cost forecasting tools (35kV and up).

  • Help develop further AES’s Clean Energy cost database for High Voltage Facilities.

  • Lead and Implement a cost estimating process.

  • Support the development and review of RFP documentation for High Voltage facilities.

  • Ensure Substation and T-Line costs include the necessary features to ensure compliance with local utilities and ISOs.

  • Provide design review and advise on any issues that appear technically incorrect or inconsistent with project documentation.

  • Supporting role during substation and T-Line designs.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with high voltage contractors and power utilities.

  • Growth opportunity for leadership within the High Voltage Engineering team.

  • Work with a project team including real estate, permitting, interconnection, attorneys, finance, and construction managers.

  • Travel and field work 20%.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of substation and T-Line cost estimating experience.

  • Experience in implementing costs database and project controls in MS Excel, MS Access or any other software database tool.

  • Excellent understanding of substation and T-line equipment based on different voltage levels and equipment manufacturer.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead discussions among HV EPCs, Power Utilities, and internal stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.

  • Excellent network of contacts in the utility and EPC business.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Project Management experience.

  • Software development specially in the creation of databases (MySQL, Python, etc.)

  • Understanding of Power systems.
