We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer 2 at our world headquarters in the Kansas City area. In this role, you will develop moderately complex mechanical solutions, test and validate and complete technology explorations for our aviation products! Other essential functions include:
- Complete moderately complex mechanical designs for Garmin or OEM products
- Expert CAD user able to model complex parts
- Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
- Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
- Interface with Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and Process Engineers to negotiate basic tradeoffs between manufacturing, appearance, and performance
- Make estimates on tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs
- Communicate effectively with vendors that produce custom mechanical parts as required
- Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems
- Possess knowledge of injection modling, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc.
- Demonstrate proficient knowledge of preferred part materials for basic part production and performance
- Demonstrate familiarity with industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)
- Works collaboratively and professionally on cross functional teams to achieve goals
- Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using creativity and sound problem solving techniques
- Serve as a mentor to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (Mechanical Engineer 1)
Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science Degree OR Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from a four year college or university AND one year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other qualifications include:
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Demonstrates knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model moderately complex parts
- Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
