The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based representative of the Medical Affairs Organization. The MSL is responsible for being a liaison to the medical and scientific community on behalf of Shionogi. This includes identification and relationship building of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) providing for meaningful scientific exchanges at national, regional and local levels in both academic and clinical practice settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Identify KOLs and build mutually productive relationships in the areas of medical education and clinical/scientific research and serve as the educational and information resource to them.

Build, update, and maintain KOL database.

Help shape a new treatment paradigm through scientific exchange with KOLs.

Respond to and document unsolicited scientific and medical information requests.

Identify and submit unsolicited requests for investigator initiated research, and serve as liaison between investigator and company.

Attend relevant conventions, symposiums, and scientific congresses to provide medical and scientific support to internal and external customers.

Maintain clinical and technical expertise in specific therapeutic areas.

Interpret and effectively deliver high-quality scientific presentations on science and data to HCPs, managed care organizations, other key external customers and Senior Leadership.

Collaborate with Patient Advocacy to develop and present relevant information to varied audiences, including medical professionals, payers, patients, representatives of patient organizations.

Identify and recommend speakers and support advisory board meetings and speaker training initiatives.

Maintain collaboration and work effectively across multi-disciplinary internal groups (Commercial, Sales, Marketing, Managed Care, Clinical, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance, etc.) to provide input to support Shionogi business objectives.

Contribute to the development and implementation of medical education strategies and initiatives; publication planning; development of medical education material; internal training, etc.

Complete accurate and timely administrative reports, projects, expense reports, training, KOL contact documentation and required documentation requests.

Provide specific and time sensitive feedback to core team on program successes, challenges and opportunities. • Continue to assess and update training program(s).

Maintain thorough knowledge of Shionogi product(s) and program(s); with required technical expertise.

Communicate in an effective and timely manner with manager and team members.

Create and maintain a positive impression with client and client’s customers.

Fully comply with all laws, regulations and Shionogi Inc. policies, Code of Conduct, all privacy and data guidelines, relevant state and federal laws and regulations.

Participate in teleconferences and live regional and district meetings and training sessions (with overnight travel as required); and represent client at National and/or local congresses when requested.

Perform special projects and assignments as directed.

Provide actionable information to enhance the value of Shionogi products.

Provide scientific insights from KOLs and Healthcare Practitioners regarding Shionogi products and competitor products.

Work effectively across multidisciplinary internal groups, within regulatory guidelines, to provide input to support Shionogi business objectives.

Demonstrate leadership across assigned special projects and resource development.

Mentoring and/or onboarding of newly hired or less experienced MSLs.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Advanced degree required; PharmD, PhD, or MD.

Related experience and knowledge in Infectious Diseases is required.

Minimum of 2 years of pharma-related experience or clinical infectious disease experience.

Two (2) years of documented success as an MSL is preferred.

Familiar with current guidelines to ensure corporate compliance in all activities, including those related to scientific interactions, unsolicited questions and clinical trials and research.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; clear, articulate and grammatically sound speech.

Ability to collaborate in a matrix environment.

Ability to effectively engage with KOLs; strong rapport building skills and active listening skills.

Excellent persuasion and presentation skills; professional appearance and demeanor.

Ability to comprehend and communicate complex technical/medical terminology and to maintain the required technical expertise including competitive product knowledge.

Must be self-motivated and disciplined.

Strong organizational and planning skills; attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Ability to work with individuals at all levels inside and outside of the company.

Demonstrated technical aptitude and working proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint and video conferencing.

Ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task and meet established deadlines.

Ability and willingness to travel up to 75% of the time to accomplish responsibilities associated with this role.

Live in a location with the ability to effectively cover assigned territory.

Live near a large airport for travel.

A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Ability to articulate clearly and conduct verbal presentations with large and small audiences.

Ability to travel via automobile and/or airplane.

Ability to sit for extended periods of time – up to four (4) hours at a time.
