Pilot Plant Lead Engineer

DOW is currently looking for a Pilot Plant Lead Engineer to be located in Terneuzen, The Netherlands.

In support of the Dow 2025 Sustainability Goals and in alignment with developing Regional (EU) and National Climate Agreements, PSPH R&D is currently exploring several options to contribute to CO2 emission reduction and stimulation of the circular economy. In the Terneuzen R&D group, we now have vacancy for a chemical engineer (PhD, PD Eng, MSc) to support these efforts. You will work in Terneuzen and in one of our new pilot lines.

R&D is currently operating a CO/CO2 separation pilot line at the steel mill of Arcelor Mittal in Gent (Belgium) and installing a down-stream CO conversion pilot line is currently installed. The unit will have flexible design to allow operation of different chemistries, but also to run on different feedstocks such as steel gas or syngas from waste (plastic) gasification.

You will join our pilot plant team and he will be responsible for running the unit. This role will combine responsibility to lead and further improve daily operations (a team of 5 people), generate/communicate reliable data and address EH&S and process safety items critical for the operation of the unit. You should be fluent in English (Dutch is helpful) and has good communication and problem-solving skills. In addition, knowledge on process development and or catalysts are desired. The role might also include responsibility and operation of a lab scale unit. You might also conduct research in other heterogeneous catalysts related projects including design of experiments, data analysis, and data modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for daily operation, and running the pilot unit safely.
  • Develops and implement technical solutions through hands-on experimentation/problem-solving for research problems that are well defined within a project area.
  • Responds urgently to plant issues and emergencies.
  • Partners with experts to perform advanced troubleshooting and improve and document operations and operating discipline.
  • Uses increased knowledge of business drivers to elevate and appropriately applies knowledge of the plant and technology referencing historical data and conferring with Research and Technology Center or other subject matter experts (SMEs).
  • Acts as a unit technical expert during unplanned events and drives implementation of effective corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ensures compliance with plant operating permits. Understands site integration and provides input to optimize the overall system.
  • Responsible for daily operation of lab scale units, design of experiment, data analysis and modeling.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s or PD Eng or a PhD Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in plant/pilot plant operation is a plus.
  • Previous experience in catalysis in general and syngas conversion in particular is a plus.
  • Interest in sustainable technology development
  • Fluency in English, Dutch is an Asset
