Department Description
The department is responsible for commissioning a wide range of current affairs programmes including Channel Four News, Dispatches, Unreported World, documentary current affairs films, studio programmes and series. The programmes must simultaneously reach broad audiences and reinforce our public service remit.
JOB PURPOSE
- Manage journey of programmes from Commissioning through to delivery and beyond
- Supporting Commissioning Editors with all paperwork and programme support and have a detailed knowledge of department output.
- Manage all relevant Editorial/Compliance processes, including sign off liaison with Commissioning Editor and associate departments.
- Responsible for smooth functioning of News and Current Affairs at all levels; attending meetings, distributing ratings, and liaising on awards.
- Accountable for the best working practice and systems in News and Current Affairs
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct incoming proposals to correct Commissioning Editor and log all pitches in the News and Current Affairs drive
- Set up and manage systems in the department, including compliance processes
- Review all of the department’s materials delivered for broadcast at the earliest opportunity, alerting Commissioning Editors and relevant parties of any issues
- Complete Programme Certifications and Language Forms for all department output, and communicating Warning/Flagging and Support details
- To be jointly responsible with the Commissioning Editor for editorial/compliance issues on specified series with appropriate reference-up to the commissioner and/or legal & compliance as and where appropriate
- Monitor the progress of different commissioning projects and liaising with departments including scheduling, press, programme management, marketing,
- presentation and legal
- Monitor programme delivery, liaising with presentation and other relevant areas on any last minute changes/delivery problems and version changes
- Raise project forms and coordinate editorial specification forms
- Track ratings and performance of programmes, distributing as required
- Act as custodian of department’s archive (Commissions, Pre-Purchases and Licences) monitoring schedules for repeats across all platforms, re-watching materials
- as necessary, and communicating with key areas on post-TX contributor and other subsequent issues requiring action
- Supervise compliance and other necessary edits of department’s output as required
- Meeting weekly press deadlines, manage legal and Commissioning Editor sign offs.
- Update General Enquiry system with titles
- Enter programmes into eligible awards, liaising with Indies about the entries
- Mandatory attendance at regular editorial and compliance training sessions
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
Technical and Professional Skills
- Advanced MS Office skills – Outlook, Word, Excel
- High level of organisation skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Demonstrated experience of handling confidential material
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of TV production process including compliance and press and publicity
- Demonstrated understanding of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code
- Demonstrable interest in television and the media
- Some video editing skills are not essential, but would be desirable

- Solid experience in a demanding, fast paced environment
- Keen interest in News and Current Affairs
- Demonstrated experience of multi-tasking and dealing with several projects at once, prioritising and working efficiently under pressure
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships at all levels of seniority, both internally and externally

- To have and use initiative, but also be able to respond to orders and have a willingness to do whatever is required, however mundane

- Good interpersonal skills. Ability to be part of a team, work well with others in an open-plan department and deal politely with visitors from other companies
