As the Sr. Regulatory Affairs Engineer, you will ensure that all vehicle environmental regulatory, certification, and compliance matters affecting current and future vehicle design/development are reported to Mitsubishi Motors in a timely manner. You will interact with regulatory agencies including but not limited to EPA and CARB; industry trade organizations (Auto Innovators, CalETC, etc.); other vehicle manufacturers; Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) affiliate offices and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) Japan.
What you’ll be doing:
Monitor, review, and provide comment on vehicle environment, regulatory, certification and compliance matters and related industry voluntary initiatives.
Consult with and support manager on policy matters regarding vehicle environmental issues.
Represent Mitsubishi Motors’ best interest U.S. regulatory agencies and industry groups on issues related to vehicle environment regulations, certification, and compliance; Advise management and MMC on recommended plan of action accordingly.
Analyze and provide guidance and strategic recommendations to MMC (with consultation with manager) on vehicle environment-related activities in the U.S. that could affect vehicle design/content and future product plans. Report these matters to MMC in a timely manner.
Guide MMC in its comments for rulemaking or other governement-intiated actions. Consolidate input from multiple groups and submit final document to government agencies.
Handle information requests & submissions from/to EPA, CARB, NHTSA, Environment Canada (EC), and other regulatory agencies in a smooth and timely manner.
Consult and cooperate with other MRDA groups and with MMNA groups (including Legal, Product Planning, Public Relations) as needed.
Work on multiple highly complex major projects requiring innovative, original solutions.
Responsible for a scope of significant size projects critical to the Company’s success.
Independently identifies complex problems and devises optimal and innovative solutions to problems that cross organizational boundaries.
Exercise independent judgment and creativity to adapt projects involving different mechanical systems.
Attend and provide reporting and analysis of key Auto Innovators technical working groups, as assigned by manager.
Work toward maintaining high quality standards and continuous improvement of the position and the organization.
Provide support for special projects, presentations, reports, and notifications as required. Notably, this includes developing strategies with MMNA and MMC to meet upcoming GHG, CAFE, and ZEV requirements.
Work to foster cooperation within the group, assists with handling any misunderstanding that might arise in a culturally diverse workforce.
Perform any other duties that may be assigned or required.
What you’ll have:
Four-year degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or equivalent.
5+ years of experience in automotive related field or other R&D environments.
Knowledge and basic understanding of automobiles.
Knowledge of Government Regulations (EPA, CARB, and NHTSA) and Test Procedures/Equipment related to automobile emissions.
Knowledge and basic understanding of engine control systems and calibrations.
Specific knowledge of GHG, CAFE and ZEV regulations, new vehicle certification processes and regulations.
Experience with exhaust emissions testing, performance testing, and OBD systems a plus.
Computer literacy, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint knowledge.

Communicate in a clear and concise manner.
Utilize written communications skills to generate a wide range of technical reports and documents and occasionally edit the work of others, including MMC staff.
Ability to negotiate complex arrangements with other groups.
