About the role
The energy system will continue to change rapidly and fundamentally on the path to net zero in 2050. National Grid are at the heart of these changes, which pose strategic questions for us as a business and for the wider sector. Group Strategy leads on answering high-level strategic questions for National Grid and working with external stakeholders to collectively answer the broader questions for the whole industry.
Within the Group Strategy team, you will support the organisation in defining its strategic direction and how to adapt to the changing energy environment, enabling net zero and drive the organisation’s future growth. As part of the role, you will enjoy exceptional exposure to the Executive Committee and senior leadership teams, working on the highest priority issues. The Strategy Manager role is an important leadership position within the National Grid Group Strategy team. Your primary responsibility will be to develop the thinking and output of the Group Strategy team. This is likely to involve:
- Applying strategic frameworks and concepts to solve complex business problems
- Developing and applying market insights to improve business planning, developing business cases supported by robust financial analysis
- Leading qualitative & quantitative research to support decision making
- Managing the project execution of major business initiatives
- Assessing and developing strategic policy positions, and influencing our engagement activities on both internal and external topics
- Understanding our commercial and competitive environment, and developing structured and insightful recommendations
- Creating high quality Board and Executive-level communications in briefing paper or slide form to share insights and shape strategic decision making
This role has multiple stakeholders, and success will require experienced facilitation and coordination skills as well as the ability to challenge established thinking and lead discussions where necessary. Your voice will be an important one in these debates and your ability to influence and take senior stakeholders with you will be crucial to your success. You will take on a “coaching role” to share your skills and experience with the team and others beyond the immediate team.
The location of the role is flexible. It can be based in central London or Warwick, with the option to work from home for part of the week. Travel to UK offices (Warwick, Solihull and London) and US offices (Boston and New York) for short trips is possible.
About you
- Experience in strategy development and/or execution in large and complex corporate and commercial environments, with an ability to apply a broad set of strategic frameworks to solve real business issues
- An understanding of the operational and commercial challenges faced by a business
- Broad understanding of the energy sector and regulatory issues affecting the industry and long term internal and external influences
- Ability to work with and influence executive level and senior leaders within an organisation, and engage effectively at multiple levels across an organisation
- Ability to lead and deliver high priority projects
- Oral and written communication skills, with an ability to convey complex strategic ideas and proposals to a wide range of audiences in a structured and logical way, through both written and verbal forms
- Comfort working in a matrix organisation with multiple stakeholders to facilitate cross functional teams which operate collaboratively and innovatively
- Ability to challenge entrenched thinking in a constructive manner; a willingness and openness to receiving similar challenge
- Ability to lead and undertake primary research and translate this into meaningful insights and recommendations
- Ability to lead and coach a team to allow them to meet their full potential

What you’ll get
A competitive salary between £70,000 – £85,000 – dependent on capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 20% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
