Purpose of Job
This position has primary responsibility for ensuring that the company’s import/export activities comply with internal policy and procedures, as well as with local, country, and international law. The Specialist will develop, maintain, and oversee the policies and procedures within the import-export compliance programs to ensure compliance. This position will work closely with all manufacturing sites, Marketing, Customer Service/Fulfilment, Purchasing, Logistics, Finance, Legal Compliance, and R&D. The specialist will interact with import-export-related governmental agencies and will be responsible for qualifying and onboarding brokers and freight forwarders. Other responsibilities include Customs reconciliations, HTS classifications, ECCN classifications, USMCA, FTAs, internal auditing, and CTPAT compliance. The Senior Specialist will be responsible for reviewing applicable regulations and updating import & export processes to address any regulatory changes. This position will be an expert resource for guidance and training on import/export compliance.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop, implement & maintain import and export compliance programs to ensure compliance to internal policy and applicable law.
- Expert resource on issues of import and export compliance for the North American region.
- Liaise with other departments and sister companies to maintain efficient import/export activities with sales, purchasing, planning, production, and logistics.
- The primary point of contact for government authorities, customers, and suppliers related to Sasol’s import/export activities.
- Qualifies all customs brokers and freight forwarders used by Sasol in North America.
- Negotiates and maintains select import compliance-related contracts.
- Responsible for determining regulatory classifications for imported and exported products (HTS, Schedule B, and ECCN Classifications)
- Responsible for providing auditing services for import-export compliance processes (internal & external)
- Provide internal compliance training to North American personnel, including in-house classes and CBTs
- Support ABAC & Sanctions screening process for vendors, customers and sample shipments
Formal Education
Bachelor’s Degree in related field strongly preferred
Working Experience
- 10 years of experience in trade compliance with a relative degree or
- 15 years of experience in trade compliance if without a degree.
- Strong knowledge and experience with HTS and ECCN classifications.
- Strong knowledge of US Export Administration Regulations and US Customs Regulations.
- Experience with USMCA agreement.
- Experience with African Growth Act and other preferential treatment programs preferred.
