We are seeking an experienced Manager to lead the Simandou Mine Study. Simandou is pioneering project to unlock the vast iron ore deposits of Guinea through the development of port, rail and mine facilities. This multi-billion dollar project has the scale and complexity to challenge and expand the capabilities of even the most seasoned project professionals. The project is seeking to move into a feasibility study by mid-year for completion at the end on 2022.

Based in our London Corporate Office, you will be working on a 5 days on / 2 days off with a requirement for moderate travel to various locations where supporting consultants are operating.

You will lead the Feasibility Study on behalf of our Product Group partners and will be accountable for:

  • Resource allocation, schedule and budget management;
  • Providing guidance and leadership to disciplines contributing to the study;
  • Managing multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts;
  • Ensuring alignment is maintained between the mine, port and rail studies and execution plans;
  • Contributing to, and supporting the preparation of project approval papers and presentations for senior management consideration;
  • Identifying, evaluating and mitigating project risks and delivering on identified opportunities;
  • Ensuring a seamless relationship between the product group business owner and Rio Tinto Projects.

Rio Tinto’s Safety Technical Projects (STP) group works closely with individual Rio Tinto Product Groups worldwide, providing a range of support and service functions, to ensure technical optimisation, establish and transfer best practices, develop strategies to drive performance improvements, and ensure that technical innovation provides a source of long-term competitive advantage.

STP has established a centralised Studies team within Rio Tinto Projects. This team is accountable for delivering Order of Magnitude, Prefeasibility and Feasibility Studies for Growth and Closure projects across the globe. In this role you will report to the Study Director – Jadar and Simandou for Rio Tinto Projects.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Strong safety mindset;
  • A tertiary qualification in Engineering, Project Management, Processing, Geoscience, Environmental Science, Business Analysis or other relevant discipline;
  • Proven Study or Project leadership experience with high influencing and negotiation skills;
  • Risk management, commercial awareness, business analysis & reporting, and operational/business knowledge;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • An ability to effectively liaise with external and internal stakeholders from multiple cultures;
  • Comfort in managing in a complex environment with a virtual team based around the world;
  • Proven history of managing ambiguity and maintaining team progress during periods of significant change;
  • Fluency in French is desirable but not essential.

This role is not an International Assignment or an Expat contract. This is a local UK Contract.
