Technology Manager – Ziegler Alcohol & Alumina

Purpose of Job

The immediate role is in the Engineering Management Team, as a Technology Manager, supervising a team of Technology Engineers for the following unit:

Ziegler Alcohol & Alumina: supporting the recently expanded Alcohol and Alumina Units

  • Ensure SHE and process safety compliance requirements are met
  • Manage Process Improvement activities for the Ziegler Units. Provide technical support to operating entities to achieve targets & realize business improvement opportunities
  • Support development, training and retention of critical technology engineering resources
  • The Technology Manager, along with the Unit Operations Manager, is responsible for the implementation of the goals and strategy developed in tandem with the Business Team. This position may serve as Sasol’s representative on industry wide committees.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Support safe, reliable and environmentally compliant operating entities within the Americas.
  • Manage the technology and IP aspects of the License Agreements and is the primary technical interface with the Licensor(s)
  • Provide strong technical knowledge of the assigned units. Develop the technical strategy for the business
  • Maintain knowledge of unit performance relative to competitive companies and technologies
  • Coordinate sharing of best practices with Sasol Chemicals Eurasian Operations
  • Identify and resolve technical operating / reliability problems effectively and efficiently
  • Work closely with Chemicals Capital Portfolio Manager to develop and support delivery of capital portfolio and realization of business opportunities
  • Supervise/ manage a team of engineers, providing support to include but not limited to the following:
    • Drive typical assignments from idea generation through to completion. Evaluate the risk vs. benefits of complex problems and take appropriate action(s)
    • Guidance in the application of company processes, policies, and procedures required to support project implementation according to the Sasol Business Development and Implementation Model
    • Troubleshooting and technical support necessary to solve plant problems
    • Ensure alignment with stakeholders to support achieving business goals and improving profitability, reliability and overall operation
    • Development of team members for career advancement
  • Requires no supervision. Knows when to communicate with management, and what communication is appropriate with the management levels

 

Formal Education

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or relevant Science required; Chemical Engineering is preferred;

Advanced degree and/or MBA is a plus

 

Working Experience

  • Relevant engineering experience; 10+ year preferred
  • Management / Supervisory experience desired
  • Experience in a PSM and ISO environment preferred

  • Strong and positive leadership and teamwork skills with a results-oriented commitment
  • Good organizational and communication ability
  • Excellent interpersonal and personal management skills
  • Strong knowledge of chemical manufacturing highly desired
    • These units are a mix of typical chemical engineering unit operations (reactors, distillation, liquid and gas – fluid flow, heat transfer, solids handling, energy efficiency, and logistics)
  • Proactively drives competitive edge in a value based and high integrity manner
