About the Barry Site
The Dow Silicones UK Ltd Barry site is the largest and most technologically advanced silicone production facility in Europe and globally one of Dow’s three silicone pillar sites which produce all the basic silicone molecule building blocks for all Dow’s silicone products globally. The site employs over 500 staff members and runs 24/7 to supply Europe with silicone intermediates and products. The Barry site has large scale continuous intermediate silicone molecule production facility which are integrated with downstream smaller batch scale processes for finished products.
About the W205 Elastomers Department
The W205 Elastomers department produces high temperature curing silicone rubbers. The area operates a large number of manually operated batch mixers to combine silicone rubber with curing agents and additives. Rubber is then extruded to customer specifications and sold into the automotive, cable insulation and aerospace industries. The area produces 100’s of product variations depending on customer specifications and has recently completed a significant expansion with investment in new technology. Candidates with assembly line, factory production or warehouse operations experience would be well suited to the role, however this is not essential.

Employees in Operations at Dow use science to build an exciting career. Currently we are looking to hire a W205 Production Operator – Day Role(Non Shift), to join our Finishing Elastomers team in Barry, UK. Are you ready to discover the science behind your career?
The role is based at Dow Silicones Barry site in South Wales and is one of the largest and most complex silicones sites in the world.
As a Production Operator you operates assigned equipment or areas of the Plant. Performs and reports on operational related activities per the Operations Dashboard (OPD)-Tasks List. Utilizes discretionary time to enable sustainable performance results for the facility. Utilizes operations knowledge and experience, to proactively operate the plant in a safe, reliable and optimal manner. Works with Shift Team members to efficiently anticipate and resolve unplanned events within the capabilities of the shift team and effectively escalates issues that cannot be resolved to the appropriate support roles. May provide training to less experienced operators. Requires established basic technical skills to perform a range of routine work activities using existing processes and methods. Days production operator role is aligned to the small order department, producing low volume high value products. Frequent product change overs requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail to prevent cross contamination. Ability to work with support teams is crucial to improve processing instructions and optimise infrequently produced materials.
Note: Operator Progression is managed at the site level.
Responsibilities / Duties
- Routine work requires a safety first mindset to safely operate heavy machinery, follow batch processing instructions, manually load equipment with raw materials and pack final product ready for shipment. Cleaning down equipment during product change overs requires good attention to detail to ensure high quality of the Elastomer rubber products.
- Follows Operating Discipline policies, principles, procedures, standards and practices to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of assigned plant areas. Ensures adequate operating discipline is available for all planned and unplanned activities.
- Operates and field checks process equipment. Monitors process conditions, key performance metrics, equipment and control systems and makes appropriate decisions to maintain and/or achieve desired rates and conditions aligned with Plant/Site/Business goals.
- Performs scheduled operational and related tasks and tasks that arise as a result of resolving unplanned events.
- Works with shift team members and other shift teams to leverage skills and knowledge to balance workload ensuring assigned tasks are completed by due dates.
- Maintains qualification in assigned areas, per facility policy, and completes training goals in a timely manner. This includes using discretionary time to address skills and knowledge gaps.
- Mentors and trains new and existing operations personnel on process operation, troubleshooting and the use of operating discipline in alignment to plant’s training process.
- Performs Immediate Response activities, as assigned.
- Initiates and documents preliminary investigations according to plant specific process/criteria and participates in formal and informal Root Cause Investigations for events involved in or by request.
- Tracks and utilizes the plant’s key performance metrics on shift that are applicable to the Operating the Plant role to optimize operations and identify improvement opportunities. Uses process knowledge and skills to make improvements in plant performance and operating discipline. Proactively identifies improvements and opportunities utilizing the facility improvement processes, appropriate management of change processes and communication tools.
- Performs Autonomous Maintenance, including minor repairs and preventative maintenance, utilizing appropriate policies, procedures, processes and disciplines. Note: Subject to local agreements.
Experience
- Manufacturing or other related experience preferred. Elastomers process operator role would benefit from experience in assembly line or a factory production environment.
- 5 GCSEs at grade C and above including Maths and Science.
